Blood and Gold
by Anne Rice. Yes, it's a Vampire book.

Wednesday, January 01, 2003

Why am I reading this book?
Warlock is full of the kind of crazy, mad killing that keeps me from watching a lot of movies and TV shows. So why have I read 642 pages? (approx. ?? words) I enjoy Wilbur Smith's stories and his writing. It's sad but true that some of the killings were "justifiable". In the content of the story they had to happen. Some of the most gruesome ones added to the authenticity - The villian was villanous to a fault. And he just got worse. The character (not the Warlock of the title) even noted, "I admire your constancy. To the very end you are true to your base nature." And his wife was just as bad! I won't ruin your read by giving details.
A collage of things said that resonate for me:

I'm finally reading Warlock by Wilbur Smith. Actually, I'm almost finished. It's good but bloody. I hate death - even fictional death, especially gruesome deaths inflicted on innocents. There's a lot of that in Warlock - but that's what happens when there is one world and three Pharaohs.

Smith's books always amaze me with their sheer depth. I believe every detail. read his bio then buy the book by clicking on the nice golden cover

I finished A Case of Curiosities on 12/15. I will go back through my notes and write.

Monday, December 09, 2002

Amazingly I'm still reading A Case of Curiosities. In a lot of ways it is the poster child for books I usually put away and never finish (more about that later). One of the cover reviewers called it a "bookish book".

The real purpose of this blog (as if a blog needs a purpose) is to say that I'm still here, still reading, still adding to my collection of books in line for my notice, still planning to update this blog. I've been working behind the scenes with my zine (I've decided I like that better than "personal website") Multipurposewoman. Soon, and very soon, I'll be on a regular schedule.

the novelist 9th of me is enjoying A Case of Curiosities but neight the people or the story are calling me to remind me to read he book. Or maybe it's just that my mind is too busy for fiction right now. But that's circular. Fiction relaxes and revitalizes my mind so reading the book if it called to me wouldn't derail me. In fact it would help me. But as I said, I forget I'm reading the book until I see it. There's still hope. I'm only on page 44 of 358 (about 13% through). I'm getting into the tub and the book is going with me.

For the following two passages alone I would read the entire book:
  • The Abbe to Claude; "Together we will search out the highest thoughts and aspirations, and in the process I hope to help you find your metaphor, as I have found mine." (page 42) -- I don't know yet what the Abbe's metaphor is . . .
  • The Abbe to Claude in response to Claude's presenting himself as the Abbe's apprentice; "No formal title will separate us, no papers will be signed. You are apprenticed to no one but yourself. that is not to say you will not learn. Or that I will not teach. You will, and I will." (page 38)

What a wonderful thing to be told especially if the speaker is true to his word. I can't wait to find out if the Abbe is as enlightened a person as he sounds in these first 42 pages.

I must admit that there are some facets of this particular blog that I haven't worked out. I think maybe the book cover image should be off to the side or in someway stay at the top but how to do this I'm not up to figuring out. In mean time I'll add new insights to the top - which actually has people reading entries about a book in reverse?

found an interesting website reated to this book and memento hominem's
It's called Cabinet of Curiosities-Project Summary. I'm just starting to explore it so I can't tell you much; check it out - send me your thoughts and I'll post yours and mine here later.

A Case of Curiosities cover

This is a very patient book. It's been beside my bed for 4+ weeks and in the house for more than 6 months. I brought it off the sale table at Hawley-Cooke when we were on our way out of town to ? I don't remember where. I liked the Joseph Cornell-ish image on the cover and the descriptive, hopefully double-entendre title; Case of Curiosities. Historical mysteries are my favorite.

Why am I reading this book?
  • The author is a first time novelist
  • Like Tulip Fever it's about art
  • it's a historical
  • I'm reading it now instead of Warlock because the preface introduced me to a historical art/diary form I've never heard of before; memento hominem. A character explains to the narrator that a memento hominem, " . . . , registers a life. Each object in the case indicates a decisive moment or relationship in the personal history of the compositor." That registered for me especially because of the series I'm working on, Self Portrait/Memoires. The character continued, "the objects chosen are often commonplace; the reasons for their selection never are." Additional info is given that will help me satisfy my need to know more about the practice of composing memento hominem and their reverse memento mori through real world research.

I'm so gullible that I've had to become a sceptic. I'll believe anything I read if it's written well. That's part of the joy of reading fiction for me - the suspension of disbelief. This is doubly so with historical works. But when the reading is over I want to know how much is "true", how much as been stretched, imagined, made up.

  • A collage of things said that resonate for me. . .
  • Why is a button or a shell or a jar worthy of so much attention?
  • Interesting . . .
  • Each chapter is identified by one of the items in the case

Sunday, October 20, 2002

I've been on a fiction hiatus hoping it would create more time for me to do "important" things but once again I have to admit that reading fiction is so relaxing to me that I get more done because my mind is relaxed when I do "important" things. I have two books that have been waiting by my bedside for more than a month; Warlock by Wilbur Smith and A Case of Curiosities by Allen Kurzweil. I love Wilbur Smith but I've never heard of A. Kurzweil. Also, by my bedside is Sherlock Holmes; the complete Novels and Stories, volume II. I've read volume I and now I just read a story now and again.

Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach

note 9/14: I'm starting these notes late. I'm on page 68/ chapter 19 and I'm just figuring out how I want to approach this blog. There were some things that I wanted to note here which I think I've lost!

9/19 - I had a moment of disappointment when the plot took a very predictable turn. But it was just a moment. The writing is tight and the plot righted itself in a way I didn't at all expect. I love when that happens. I'm enjoying the book.

Why am I reading this book? It's a historical, it's about art (like my novel), the author has published 12 other works of fiction. I love finding a new author who also has other books already published and ready for me to read just in case I like their work.

A collage of things said that resonate for me:
  • "His composition has been disordered by love."
  • "The world is chaotic. All artists know this, but they try to make sense of it."
